Utah. Zurich. Boston. Zermatt. Our story as Ratskeller officially begins in 2020 but was born decades ago in the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah. Mix in a global pandemic and a bit of inspiration from a shared bottle of “train wine” on an annual trip from Zurich to Zermatt, and the idea of Ratskeller turned into reality.
Today, we are building a female-owned wine import business that is looking to partner with like-minded winemakers, restaurants, and retailers who see the opportunity to sell and serve the best of what Switzerland has to offer.
We could write forever about the centuries of wine making culture where vines must grow on steep and stunning hillsides, the care of the land ingrained in the Swiss approach of producing natural and biodynamic wines, and the fact that almost none (less than 1%!) of these wines ever make it out of the country...but we won’t. Instead, we have a simple goal of bringing the outstanding wines that we enjoy drinking from this famously picturesque country to new people and places.
In Switzerland, a “Ratskeller” is a bar or restaurant often located in the basement of a city hall (Rathaus), a place where citizens of the city could gather. Because we believe it's (almost) our civic duty to bring a handful of unique, innovative Swiss wines made impeccably well for the people to the people, the name seemed right. R-A-T is also a combination of the first letter of each of the friends’ names.
Rayna, originally from Northern Utah, now calls Zurich, Switzerland home with her partner, Alvaro, and their cats, Tash & Bao. Though her studies landed her in biotechnology, Rayna moonlighted in fine dining establishments focusing on California wines in the early part of her career. She has continued learning and exploring food and wine through her travels around the world. Her real joy is off-the-beaten-path adventures and finding hidden gems. In moving to Switzerland, Rayna was delighted to find a treasure trove of amazing wine and is passionate to share it with others.
While Alex traces her roots back to the Swiss town of Siselen, the main reason she loves Swiss wines is her friendship with Rayna, her love of travel to Switzerland, and the memories of trips with her family to enjoy the food, drink, and landscape of the Swiss Alps. Alex lives in Boston with her husband, Tom, and their children who enjoy Swiss Chocolate...and the playground car found in many Swiss trains.
We hope to work with a small group of winemakers who are inspired to work with an innovative, dedicated, female-owned wine importer.
